The Department for Social Development, and a multi-disciplinary team comprising Benoy Ltd, Deloitte and Peter Brett Associates, submitted an outline planning application (Z/2014/1535/O) in November 2014 proposing a performance space and restaurant venue located on land adjacent Custom House Square at Albert Square.

The application proposed a structure that would incorporate a permanent performance stage for one off events, overlooking the square, with backstage areas, stage lighting and storage facilities. Also proposed was a cafe / restaurant to operate daily and utilising the stage area for external seating in between events.

The application was refused by Belfast City Council’s Planning Department in December 2015.
