The Queen's Building suffered major fire damage in the early hours of 14 October 2004. Over 90 firefighters, using more
than 20 fire appliances fought the blaze, with some firefighters positioned on the roof of the neighboring CastleCourt Shopping Centre. The internal structure was significantly damaged but the 1883 listed building was largely intact. Previously the building provided office accommodation on the upper floors and two ground floor retail units (Waterstones and Goldsmiths) but following the fire a scheme was proposed to provide 28,000 sq ft of retail space over five floors. WDR & RT Taggart drew up plans to retain the facade and rebuild the internal structure whilst work was carried out by The building was let to H & M in 2007 and the retailer opened in November 2007. |
