Soon after the completion of the Radisson SAS Hotel in 2004, which was developed by Inislyn, Culzean Holdings submitted plans for a second hotel within the Gasworks site. CUSP, with the Kennedy Group form Culzean Holdings, a company set up to develop hotels within the province. This immediately raised concerns from the Radisson who objected to the plans for a hotel on plot 4, which was used for many years as surface car parking.
At a meeting of the development committee in October 2006 permission was granted to Culzean to plan a hotel on the site but with certain pre-conditions. Culzean proposed a 169 bed Marriott hotel for the site, however, the council would not allow the development to progress until at least 2009. In February 2008 when the planning application (2008/0518/F) was submitted it was announced that construction could commence in October 2008. However planning permission was not obtained until November 2010. |
