Church House |
|
Church House was constructed in 1905 and currently provides a 1300 seat Assembly Hall, offices and a shopping mall (The Spires Shopping Mall). The shopping mall was developed as part of the 1992 refurbishment of the building which also provided improved office space and involved the refurbishment of the Grand Assembly Hall.
In December 2008 Church House received a £1m grant from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) to repair and clean the exterior of the grade A listed building. The work to restore the external stonework, which includes the 40m high clock tower, began at the beginning of 2009 and will last until summer 2010, costing £4m. In June 2009 a £1.8m plan to renovate the interior of the building was approved by the annual general assembly. The work will begin in 2011 and will provide an improved entrance and reception area, an upgrade to the lift, stairs and landings and the third floor will be converted into open plan office space.
