The CAN building was first proposed for the site alongside Custom House Square in 2005. The Laganside Corporation development site was to be developed into a unique building that would provide café’s performance space, a stage area and the building was also planned to allow for pictures or movies to be projected onto the side of the building that looked into the square. Colin Conn Architects provided the design for the scheme which would be taken forward by Colin Conn’s property development company; Blok Developments. However, the planning service were not keen on the proposal submitted in May 2005 and in March 2007 the application was withdrawn by the applicant. The planning service felt the the building was too imposing upon the listed Custom House building and the scheme has been dropped.
