Original building: 1967 | Extended: 1985 | Extended: 1997 | Refurbished: 2001 | Extension & Refurbishment: 2007 In 1997 the store underwent an £8m extension which involved the conversion of a second floor storeroom overlooking City Hall into 17,500sq ft of extra retail space. The Water Board Building door was also re-opened as part of the project. During 2007 the building underwent an extensive refurbishment project to modernise the existing retail store and the building façade. Before the £35m extension and refurbishment project it had been rumoured that M&S were interested in relocating to the Victoria Square development however the massive investment indicates that M&S are firmly committed to their Donegall Place site. The project involved the extension of the shop into the adjacent building which previously housed the Bank of Ireland to add an extra 10,000sq ft of space. The existing Marks & Spencer building received a new glass façade while the converted Bank of Ireland building was clad in copper. |
